Gurdwara
Singh Sabha, Bradford is the newest Gurdwara in Bradford having
officially opened its doors to the Sangat in October 1994. Before
the Gurdwara was built, local Sangat would have kirtan programmes
and do Sikhi Parchaar at home. It was soon decided that a Gurdwara
was desperately needed. Thanks to generous donations from the Sangat,
enough money was collected to buy a disused factory site close to
the City Centre in February 1994. With Guru Ji’s grace, the Sangat
got together and converted the site into the Gurdwara that stands
there today.
2 years
later, the Darbar Sahib was extended to cater for the increasing
amount of Sangat coming week in, week out.
The Gurdwara
has always been active in promoting Sikhi, especially to the Youth.
Kirtan, Gurbani and Punjabi classes were set up to get the youth
involved at the Gurdwara. An annual Sikh Youth Camp was organised by
the youth, and will now be in its 5th year.
In a further
act to promote Sikhi towards the youth, a projector and laptop was
bought by the Gurdwara. This allows the whole Sangat to sing along
with the Kirtan as the Gurbani and English translation is projected
on to a large screen in the Darbar Sahib. Again, this was funded by
the Sangat who donated generously.
Such is the
amount of Parchaar that the Gurdwara does, that it has been decided
to extend the Gurdwara for a second time. Plans are well underway to
totally revamp the building, with the Darbar Sahib and Langar hall
being extended, and a second hall being built. Building work is due
to commence later this year. The Gurdwara has also bought the
neighbouring disused building and demolished it. After work on the
Gurdwara is complete, a sports and recreation centre will be built
over this. This building will also house the Khalsa Punjabi School,
which with its ever increasing number of pupils is getting to big
for the Gurdwara!
